ME-6. Internet, Technology and Media Safety

1. Suitable for all. You can only watch or play any multimedia content (including but not limited to: video, film, games, television, music, radio, audio book) that is suitable for all in a public space.

a. Suitable for all should not include scenes of extreme graphic violence, adult sexual content, scenes of a frightening or disturbing nature, adult/offensive language, have a certificate rating or age recommendation higher than PG or 8 years old.

b. A public space is any room whereby any member of the community could enter at any time or that is a thoroughfare to other spaces, or where others can see/hear the content unintentionally.

2. Media consent. Before allowing others to watch / play media content with you that is not suitable to all (see law 2.a.) you must inform them of its nature and check they consent.

3. Screening. Films, programmes, games and other media content that is not suitable for all being screened must be shown in a room with a notice posted on the door giving the following information:

a. Title of film/content

b. Time of screening

c. Film certificate rating (where applicable)

d. commonsensemedia.org age guide

e. Description of content, listing type of sensitive content

f. Name of member that can give more information, where possible

4. Restricted content. No one may go onto any website or screen or download any content which shows or promotes unreasonable and unacceptable behaviour. This includes pornography, promotion of self-harm, extreme violence, racist or extremist views. Any devices containing such content may be confiscated and passed to the police or child protection services as appropriate.

5. Offline laws apply. Behaviour online is subject to all other EKS laws.

a. You have a responsibility to uphold the values of our community online as well as offline. Treat people with respect and equality.

b. You cannot post any content, comments, images or videos which could cause harm, distress or offence to someone. You cannot post anything that would incite hate in others towards an individual or a group.

c. Cyberbullying is the same as offline harassment.

d. Taking or destroying people’s digital property is the same as taking someone’s physical property.

6. Social media. You cannot mention EKS is your social media biographies, usernames or posts.

7. Don’t discuss EKS online. Students cannot give anyone you meet online information about your association with EKS whilst a current student.

8. Personal information. Do not give out any personal information about yourself to people you meet online.

9. Online accounts. Do not use anyone else’s online accounts.

10. Media library. Any media contained within the EKS library such as books, DVDs, music which is not suitable for all (see law 2.a.) must show a content warning sticker, accompanied by relevant details about the content in order that members can make informed decisions before accessing media. This is maintained by the Library Committee.

11. Downloads. No one may download or install software on EKS devices without permission from the IT Club Chair. No one may download or install software designed to bypass security and filtering systems.

12. Email attachments. Do not open email attachments from suspicious or unknown accounts.

13. Logging off/locking devices. You must log off any personal accounts or lock devices/screens and close any files containing personal/sensitive data when you have finished working or are leaving a device unattended.

14. Passwords. Use secure passwords and keep them safe.

a. Do not share passwords with others or write them down where others can find them.

b. Only use strong passwords, i.e. more than 8 characters long, contain upper and lowercase letters, numbers and maybe symbols as well, be memorable to you but not easy to guess.

15. Mobile free zones. Mobile phones and other devices are cannot be used in toilets or changing rooms.
